We have 16 domestic ducks which we have been raising since they were shipped to us at one day old (Indian runners, khaki campbell, swedish blue and buff orpington). It has gone well and they are 5-1/2 weeks old now. We were told that they could be let go at 6 weeks but after all our care, we don't want them eaten by various predators. Any suggestions or words of advice? We have a two acre pond with wild geese and occasional wild mallards, etc. Are there precautions we should take? When will be know it's time for them to be on their own? Should we keep them penned at night .... for how long? Any information would be greatly appreciated. The books I have found discuss raising in detail, but then proceed to slaughtering, egg production, etc. Not too helpful for us. Thank you. Nancy Schwa

Great to find you, hope you will be able to find time to extend the services for BWA. Did have difficulty getting to you as going through Dejanews brought up no source. We are in the process of getting a small waterfowl park going in the West Highlands, having seen Folly Farm several years ago, I have high standards to begin to emulate. Any assistance welcomed - hints and tips - no point in reinventing the wheel where others have learnt good lessons. Look forward to keeping in touch. Jill

Dear Sir or Madame, I just realised that I sent an e-mail to one of your links....INKWELLS!!!! A definite foul, not fowl, which I had intended. Let me try again. I live in Akron, Ohio. USA. In the centre of our office complex is a pond that attracts many water fowl. A new addition is with a black head, white wings, and dives underwater and stays there for long periods at a time. Do you have any idea what this could be? I will check my books at home, too. But thought in the event that I do not have the time, you may be able to help. Thanks, Terry

We keep a small selection of wildfowl eg. Mandarins, Carolinas, Tufted Ducks, Ringed Teal, Australian Main Geese and Ne-Nes. I noticed that the ringed teal had laid a couple of eggs and on the following day I noticed that the Carolinas were showing an interest in the same nest box. When I re-checked it, the box was empty. Does anyone have experience of Carolinas evicting eggs from nest boxes?

Can you help identify a large waterbird? It is the size of a goose, with a long neck, the body is white w/ some black tail and wingtip feathers. The bill is flat, yellow/orange w/ black/white spot at tip. The feet are webbed. The entire head and neck area is covered in red, bumpy/deformed skin like that of a turkey (almost buzzard like). It has a crest of bristle like feathers along the top head/neck area that's only visible when it preens itself. I came upon such a creature on the shore of a Maryland lake and he/she was quite tame, in fact came to beg for food and gently but accurately pecked and gobbled the loaf of bread I had up. I would appreciate any help in identifying this bird. I have yet to see a picture on the web of such a bird. It is NOT a swan, very large for a duck, closer to the

I think I told you once about the ringed teal (a male, clearly an escapee as we live in South Florida)we saw last spring. He spent the entire season with as a "third-wheel" to a mating pair of blue-winged teal. We noticed that the first of the blue-wings have arrived at the marsh and wondered whether or not we should expect our fugitive ringed teal to show up before too long. Do you know whether or not the teals come back to the same place each year? Thanks. Anne

This is a great site. I have not been able to get Muscovy
ducklings anywhere. I am worried that they are going to be getting extinct at
least around here. So good for you!!! Everyone thinks they are ugly but they
aren't you know. So many colors now that I am mystified and would love some of
each. Have 5.5. acres to devote to these guys so would appreciate any you can
send this way. BTW this is Idaho! Thanks and God Bless, Susan

I need to revamp my 8' x 12' pond to make it more acceptable
to the 5 geese and about 10 ducks I care for. I can only use a rubber type liner
as I cannot afford to do a concrete liner and my husband cannot build one. Do I
make the sides steep or what? Do I put a ledge round the edge? Help please !!
Many thanks in anticipation.

Hello, I have one pair of ringed teals in a small pond in my garden for
two years now. Every morning they are waiting for me to have a slice of bread
and they are eating out of my hand. Last year I had 8 young teals in july but
now I have allready 7 eggs so I hope this will be a good breeding-season for me
and my ducks. I hope that my English-spelling is good, Good bye

Yesterday, i came across this duck that looked like a
rooster. It had red around its eyes, the neck up was white (like a duck),but the
rest of it was the dark feathers of a rooster .It also sounded like a chicken
clucking. Now there are both ducks and roosters at the pond , so I was wondering
if it could be a mix of the two . Is that possible? When I get a picture I'll
send one. thanks a lot, lisa
