My Garner family back thru great-grandfather was in Greene County, Arkansas (Paragould) Great-Grandfather was Franklin Pierce Garner, Grandfather was Gilbert Frances Garner (1888 to 1968) Father was Artie Houston Garner. Gilbert married a Lula Vinnie Murdoch, had two children, one being my father and the other Amos Dillon Garner. Franklin Pierce Garner married (Elisabeth Corning I think) and had two sons Gilbert F. and Artie (?) Both sons were pharmacists, one owning Garner Drug in Paragould and one woning Garner Drug in Portia, Ark. Any information would be helpful as another family member has family Bibles and does not/will not share information. I am just beginning and don't know where else to turn. Thank you!

My Mother was a Garner before she married my father. She was born in Cord, Ar., daughter of Marvin Garner who was born in Battle Axe, Ar in 1907. Marvin's father was Samuel S. Garner, who was born near Batesville, Ar. in 1841. Samuel S. Garner's father was named Samuel Garner born in N.C. in about 1788. Samuel Garner migrated to Ar. & bought nearly 500 acres of farm land NW of Tuckerman, Ar. along Black River in 1838 and married Myrel Williams on Christmas Eve in 1840. Although there were 4 children listed in the household, Samuel S. Garner was the only born to them.

We feed them the appropriate foods and We have taken it upon ourselves to do very sanitary clean up after them. They are friendly and one of them lets me and only me pet her. The neighbors are angry and tell me they carry disease. Could you please help me assuage their fears. I so love wild life and I am trying to work with the children on respecting them and yet not being fearful of them. HELP.

Hi Kathy, Your website is great. I'm still searching for my husband's family. These Garners came in from the Carolinas and moved into Sumter County Alabama, then into Wayne County Mississippi. I know his ggrandfather was John H Garner, born Sumter Co, AL in 1837, and is buried in Chason Cemetery in Wayne County Miss. His grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Garner, born Sept 1, 1858 in Sumter Co, AL. As you know, many county courthouses burned and unfortunately, records were lost. I can't seem to find where they moved to Miss., nor can I find proof of John's lineage. We think they are decendents of Parish Garner but haven't made the connection yet. Keep up the good work! Honey

I haven't started researching my family history yet but it seems like a lot of the work has been done already.
Seems more than coincidental that there seem to the Hutsbys and Hutchbys around Nottingham/Derbyshire at the same time, my father and uncle were both from the Langley Mill/Cotmanhay area also.
I'm not sure when and where the surnames split apart but would love to find out.

Hi,
I grew up in Birkenhead, and worked for Cammell Laird for forty years. HMS BIRKENHEAD was built by this
company [ John Laird] . It's yard # was 42, It was built on spec to prove to the world that iron was better
than wood , but Lairds lost out for a few more years.
Yours Truely
John Smith

I'm looking for information about my great-grandfather Thomas Henry Beniston, born 1883. He married Ada Thomas in Birmingham, UK, 1907. They had several children whose names I don't know, except my grandfather's, Horace James. Horace joined the Somerset Light Infantry as a regular soldier in the 1920s to escape the poverty of Birmingham. Horace married Frances Rathbone, and they and their children emigrated to New Zealand in the 1950s on the Captain Hobson. Any information would be appreciated.

It is a family lore that my great grandmother was either on the HMS Birkenhead at the time of floundering or that she arrived in Cape Town on the Birkenhead in 1852. As it is the 150th anniversary of the floundering, I would like to find out whether this is true, but do not know where to start looking. Her name was Marjory and surname Daw or spelled Doar or Doarre and it seems she arrived as a nursing member, from Cork.

The Rayner Trophy is an annual prestigous and challenging competition for Scouts. It takes the form of an overnight hike with various activities based on scouting skills along the way. The competition usually has a theme and I was hoping to use the sinking of the Birkenhead as a theme this year. The competition takes place 22/23 Feb 2002 between De kelders and Hermanus. I need more information regarding the actual sinking of the ship. Can you help with some web sites or books?

I have enjoyed reading the material on this site. I have written my own story about the Birkenhead disaster because my great-grandfather, John Richards Howard, was a ten-year-old boy who was thrown into one of the lifeboats by his father, Richard Howard, a seaman on the ship. Richard Howard was thirty years old when the ship went down. His name does not appear on any of the lists because many of the lists were lost as I understand. However, in the book "Drums of the Birkenhead," J.Howard, boy, is listed. I love the history surrounding this disaster.

Hunting for the name Daly,I found my great great grandfather. The family legend has it that Charles Daly helped to let the horses out of the hold of the Birkenhead and arrive on shore in only his shirt tails. His decedant still farm today on the family farm called Home Rule. I'd often wondered about the tale and here at last is the proof that he was on the Birkenhead as told to me as a child. I'd be happy to here from any other Daly's who are decendant of the orignal Charles Daly.

My husband's ancestor, Richard Coleman went down with/on the Birkenhead. I have been working for several years to determine his age, place of origin etc. Does anyone know of any records related to the Birkenhead tragedy or others that could be of help. We were able to get a researcher to access Regimental muster records. He was able to determine that Richard Coleman #1849 enlisted with the 2nd Regiment Foot at Glascow and joined the Regiment at Chatam 26.10.43. We know that he married in 1846 and was with the Regiment when it moved to Dublin. It mentions that he was detached for some time at Downpatrick in 1850 but was with the Battalion again when it left from Cork for South Africa. Family was always told that his wife & son were rescued from the Birkenhead but we have only found evidence to the contrary. No

Noted your page while researching Bakewell, Derbyshire, and the listing of the surname "Birch". Our family ancestry comes from Bakewell byways of Rev. Jonathan Birch, Vicar of Bakewell 1700s.

I am trying to establish the provenance of an artifact purported to be from the Birkenhead. The artifact, a heavy bronze tap assembly and attached lead piping, was supposedly
recovered from the wreck in 1958 by the Tromp van Diggelen dive expeditions. These expeditions had the specific purpose of retrieving commercially valuable metals, and I believe that records were kept of recovered items. I would be grateful for any information

Searching for any information on the children of Isaac Shaw (1835-?) and his wife Mary Anne Beniston (1852-?).
Isaac originated Derbyshire and Mary Anne in Nottingham.
I know of only one child, Anne Shaw (1887-?). Surely there are MORE?

I am a direct decendant of the Maltby family that lived in Ilkeston, Derbyshire and were Lace Mill owners. The mills eventually closed and my grandparents and father, Edward b1930, moved to Essex. Very interested to get info on birth, deaths & marrages of any descendants.

Dear Arthur
I have started to try and research more family on the maternal sides of the marvellous tree you provided me with and came upon a submission you gave to the LDS Pedigree resource file! How wonderful that you are willing to share your information. If you have any updates it would great to hear about them ... great things are about to happen on the church website and file access. Will keep you posted. Julie Dumayne (great granddaughter of Ernest Beniston/Elizabeth Day

I am an Australian war poet/author, originally from Woolton in Liverpool, England and I came across your site by accident. I am currently writing about the Boer War with flashbacks to the previous wars and would like to know where the Birkenhead was built and the date and docks when she left England (?) for her tragic journey to Africa. I couldn't help but see the irony in the name of the Quartermaster who was steering the Birkenhead when she capsized...

Back around 1996 I was in a doctor's waiting room reading an article in a Readers Digest magazine. The article was about a Greek cruise ship, the Oceanos, that sank off the South African coast in sometime in the 1970's or 80's. The story recounted how the cowardly crew abandoned ship and left the passengers to fend for themselves. It then made reference to the sinking of the Birkenhead and the Birkenhead Drill.
So I did all the research I could at the time ( slim pickings on the subject in this part of the country ). So I wrote a poem about which has been published locally but I never knew until I found this website that there was an organization dedicated to this great
event. So I am forwarding a copy of my poem to the webmaster in the in the hope that you may find it worthy of the memory of these

Thank you for putting this website together and keeping it afloat. My great-great-great-grandfather, John Richards Howard, survived the Birkenhead shipwreck. I recently started a blog (http://johnrichardshoward.blogspot.com) to further explore his life and to connect with other descendants. Thanks again for keeping the website going.

You are probably aware of this already but we in the Royal Naval Association in Capetown gather each year at Danger Point on the anniversary of the sinking of Birkenhead to hold a short remembrance service and then a lunch in the vicinity. We have been holding this gathering for 4 years so far. We parade the banners of both RNA and HMS Ganges Associations. Regards Peter Turton

Please describe the 'Birkenhead drill' and were many Irish soldiers or soldiers of Irish regiments who stood to attention amid the panic and chaos. Many thanks
