I recently ran across a metal inkwell with the name "Old Mortality" engraved on the front and the dedication to a fellow who was the "Head of the Gospel", regretably the name of the chap escapes me as ths moment......there were several other names on this piece depicting a graveyard of some sort with several figures ...quite a lovely piece and the owner believes it to be quite old and quite rare....can you be of any help? Till then, Andrew

I was looking through your examples to find history of inkwell passed through my family. It is a cast metal sitting camel with rather ornate harness & saddle. The top portion of the saddle is hinged & glass container for ink is inside. It appears to have been washed in a thin brown paint of some sort & there are remnants of brighter colors used to decorate the saddle, harness fringes, etc. If you have knowledge of this type of item, I would like to learn. Great web site. thank you

I am in process of restoring an English writing box of c.1850, and am looking for an ink bottle to match the existing one (long shot!) Can you direct me to any source which may be able to help upon a complete description, or could you? It is similar to the square, sloped-shoulder, screw-top bottle in your collection. I believe the screw top to be silver, or silvered, but have not yet examined it in any great detail, as I am concentrating on the woodwork.

I scanned through your pages of inkwells and was impressed. I am taking advantage of the "query"! I have in my possession an inkstand that I have been unable to find much information about. There is no manufacturer's mark that I can locate. The well itself is molded milk glass in a "snail" shape approximately 2 inches tall. It sits in a stand 4.5 in.long, 2 in. wide and 3.5 in.tall. The well pivots in the stand. The stand is made of a magnetic metal and is quite ornate with a detailed vase and bouquet of flowers on either side. The top of the "bouquet" holds the pens. I have seen a similar double well on the web but the design was different on the sides. The comment stated that there were few of this type left because of the fragilty. I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me some insight as

It has balck painted rectangles on 3 sides and the top that look like alligator skin--very small alligator. It has B.Altman & co. on the botton. I recently purchased a porcelain desk set for our 1910 house museum and I'm trying to date it. I believe it's from the 1920s, but when did inkwells stop being commonly used? Thanks very much, Dawn

Very well designed and easy to navigate site with great layout and nicely varied collection. I've been collecting for some time and am currently in the market for colored cut glass, small cabinet pieces preferred but I'd consider small inkstands as well. I prefer the single inks with brass collars and matching cut glass lids. Looking specifically for vaseline, green, ruby and amethyst or rare shapes in sapphire blue. Thanks. Kindly add me to your mailing list please: 15621 Latina Place, Wellington, FL 33414 (56l)795-4l82 or 798-2276. Thanks again.

I have inherited a greenish yellow vaseline inkwell. It is six sided and approximately 2 1/2 inches tall with a silver rim which attaches it to a hinged top. It has a hand painted design on the six sides (all sides have the same design). Can anyone give me any information about this as far as when or value? I can find no markings on it-is there a special place I should look? It is in exceptional condition. Thank you for any help you can give me. Nancy
